2007 Bond Referendum Summary Print E-mail

Break down of projects and costs by school type. Also included are administration fees, licensing costs and Central Services upgrades.

Elementary School Projects

Bethesda Elementary School

This project provides for the replacement of the roofing system of the main building.
$1,245,833

Club Boulevard Elementary School

Following an addition through the 2003 Bond, this project will renovate all of the original structure with new floors, ceilings, casework, upgraded restrooms and more.

Creekside Elementary School

Already crowded with numerous mobile classrooms, the project will add eight (8) classrooms and support spaces. The Southern areas of Durham remain the fastest growing areas.

Easley Elementary School

Despite the continued need for five (5) mobile classrooms, Easley’s most pressing, major capital needs are replacement of its roofing system as well as the chiller and controls of the HVAC system.

Glenn Elementary School

Glenn also is overcrowded, yet relief may be provided by added capacity elsewhere. This project will provide new roofing for the small kindergarten building and the replacement of the chiller and controls of the HVAC system.

R. N. Harris Elementary School

Following an addition provided by the 2001 Bond, Harris’ original building will receive a thorough renovation including new windows, HVAC, casework and finishes.

Mangum Elementary School

The 2003 Bond will provide a replacement for the oldest building at Mangum. The 2007 Bond will provide new HVAC and modest renovations to the older wing between the main building and the gymnasium. Asbestos abatement is also included.

Merrick-Moore Elementary School

Full roofing system replacement is planned for Merrick-Moore. Additionally, replacement of the chiller and most HVAC components will occur. Lastly, an allowance for modest renovations of older areas is included.

Parkwood Elementary School

This multi-building campus endured significant overcrowding prior to the opening of Creekside. Several of the older wings will be renovated while others will have roofing systems replaced. Some site work is included such as paving the bus lot.

E. K. Powe Elementary School 

The oldest wings (1920’s & 1960’s) need basic renovations including flooring, casework and other finishes. Minor sitework with paving, drainage, and fencing is also planned.

Y. E. Smith Elementary School

Smith will receive an addition to provide modern core spaces such as music, art and computer rooms. Renovations to the existing building will include new windows, a new cooler/freezer and general upgrades to finishes.

New Elementary School “E”

This new facility will serve approximately 600 students on land already acquired in NE Durham. The location is near rapid, high-growth neighborhoods and may provide space relief to schools in the region.

New Elementary School “F”

This funding will provide for the acquisition of land for a future Elementary School. The location selected will be determined by growth, need and availability and will be approved by school and county boards.

Playground Upgrades

A professional study has identified upgrades to all elementary playgrounds. With over sixty play areas at twenty-eight schools, this significant effort will complete the modernization work started in the 2003 Bond. Updates are prioritized by the professional study.

Middle School Projects

Carrington Middle School

This project will include roofing system replacement to the original buildings. The original areas will also receive badly needed HVAC system replacement.

Neal Middle School

Neal will be completely renovated. The oldest areas will include window replacement, roofing and restroom upgrades while all areas will receive new finishes, casework and more.

New Middle School “B”

A new Middle School providing capacity for approximately 850 students will be built on property already acquired in Northern Durham. The school will share some athletic fields with an adjacent city park.

Secondary and High School Projects

Durham School of the Arts

The Carr Building at DSA requires extensive renovations to all building systems and finishes. The campus will also receive a sprinkler system, asbestos abatement and other upgrades.

Hillside High School

The current cafeteria at Hillside will be expanded to provide an increase in sitting and serving capacity.

Jordan High School

Jordan’s much-noted traffic congestion and pedestrian safety issues will get relief from a new, longer driveway and drop-off/pick up area.

Lakeview School

A new gymnasium addition will be provided to this site along with modest parking expansions.

New High School “A”

Property will be acquired on which to build the first phase of a new high school. With an eventual capacity of over 1,400 students, the first phase will accommodate approximately 800 students. The location of the site is yet to be determined. Current growth and overcrowding at Riverside and Jordan make this project urgent.

City of Medicine Academy

A new facility supporting this 400 student program will be built on property adjacent to Durham Regional Hospital.
